Hilo Orchid Society
Yasuji Takasaki Memorial Scholarship Information For 2020-2021
Note: Deadline for scholarship application has been extended to May 30, 2020.
The Hilo Orchid Society strives to extend the knowledge, production, and appreciation of orchids. This goal is evident in HOS support of students in Agriculture and Natural Science major programs at University of Hawai`i at Hilo who hold academic goals that will promote and foster future development of the Hawai`i orchid industry. This scholarship was established to honor Yasuji Takasaki, a pioneer in orchid culture on Hawai`i Island, who strongly believed in the power of a college education and made many valuable contributions to the Hilo Orchid Society.
Scholarships will be awarded to one or more University of Hawai'i at Hilo sophomore, junior, or senior students pursuing a bachelor's degree in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management or in a Natural Science major. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated an interest in orchid culture or a related field. Recipients will be awarded a scholarship (grant) of $1500 each semester of the academic year, provided they maintain their eligibility. Recipients will also receive a free membership in Hilo Orchid Society for one year.
Eligibility: Applicant must
1) Be a UH-Hilo undergraduate with a minimum of sophomore standing at start of the fall semester 2020.
2) Be pursuing a bachelor's degree in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management or in a Natural Science major.
3) Have at least a minimum GPA of 2.8
4) Demonstrate financial need, but not necessarily as determined by federal guidelines.
5) Preference will be given to applicants who intend to live or work in Hawai'i and make specific or general contribution to the Hawai'i orchid industry.
Further Expectations: Recipients will be invited to attend one Hilo Orchid Society meeting during fall semester 2020 to be recognized by the society. Recipients should be prepared to make a brief presentation to the membership.
