Intergeneric Hybrids
Tom Perlite, owner of Golden Gate Orchids in San Francisco, has been
growing orchids for the past 30 years. After receiving a degree in Botany from
Cal Berkeley, Tom worked at the Rod McLellan Co., and subsequently started
Golden Gate Orchids in 1981. Golden Gate Orchids is a wholesale nursery with
greenhouses in San Francisco and Pacifica. They specialize in cool growing
orchids, including Odontoglossum, Masdevallias, Miltonias, and Dendrobiums.
With the ideal growing climate in San Francisco, Tom has been growing
Odontoglossums since the mid 70s and is an accomplished hybridizer of
Odontoglossums and intergenerics. Tom is an accredited AOS judge and has
received numerous awards including Grand Champion at the Osaka International
Orchid Show, the George Moore Medal from the RHS, the Butterworth Prize and
five FCCs from the AOS.
PLANT SALES
TABLE
There will be a members plant sale table at this
meeting. Plants must be healthy, disease and pest free. All plants must be
properly labeled. Plants must be listed with your own number and the list
turned in to Karen Hagen. This is a great opportunity for members to sell their
extra plants.

Meet Dr. Motes our Speaker for
November
 |
He gave a very informative Vanda culture session before the main
meeting. And in the main meeting he talked about and showed where his Vanda
breeding program is going. One important thing that I learned about Vanda
culture was to watch the root tips. If they are nice and green -- good. If not
find the problem!! |

enlightening and humorous |

Singapore but now is the manager of Asia Pacific Orchid Farm. |
|
 |
Dennis D'Alesandro related some very exciting stories on his
introduction to orchids, his travels and living in Equador. He has discovered
many orchids new to science and some are named after him. His talk was very
well received. He also brought in some rare plants for auction, sale and the
drawing. |
